In 1994, Tonya was hailed as a star following the incident in which her primary rival Nancy Kerrigan mysteriously was assaulted in the days leading up to the 'National Championship'. The fame and notoriety so well that she changed the landscape of female skating. Numerous academics have resorted to her tale to evaluate and judge students. A biopic, titled I, Tonya, was also released in 2017.
