Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. Her parents, however, did not allow her to act until she reached the age of adulthood because of the impact stress might be able to have on their daughter. Perry was shy during high school and didn't act. The actress began her acting career at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was moved to the university from Boston University. Perry starred in nine episodes of ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, she was a part-time character in ABC's political thriller Scandal in which her father was the main character. The actress was also featured on The CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The part was offered to her through audition, even though she is a relative to the character.
